Mental Health Studio

What is the Mental Health Design Studio? A multidisciplinary creative team on a mission to design human-centered experiences within the mental health journey.

Studio’s mission: Define and design human-centered experiences within the end-to-end mental and behavioral health journey that ease access and delivery of care among members, advocates and providers.

Problem Statement

PCPs are struggling to give mental health care in a restrictive clinical setting. How can we create a better experience for PCPs and their patients?

Research & Discovery

Step 1 - Reviewed secondary research that included articles and research summaries done by other teams across the company.

Step 2 - Conducted primary research. Our design researcher created a study on dscout and recruited 8 PCPs, 11 patients, and 8 care coordinators. The main objectives were to understand the differences between PCPs who champion BH care versus those who avoid BH care as well as the major pain points in the healthcare journey for patients and care coordinators.

Step 3 - Reviewing the results. As a team, we worked collaboratively in daily working sessions to review the research results and distill key insights.

Outcome

We identified 7 different phases of the mental health journey and captured the activities and events within each one.

The deliverable that I worked on was a set of three unique journey maps that included memorable quotes from our primary research as well as useful insights from each phase.

Concept Ideation

We took the top opportunity areas to our stakeholders and had a one day collaboration workshop in which we generated over a hundred potential solutions. We vetted the ideas down to a top 7 using an impact/effort matrix, user feedback via dscout, and checked them against our design principles.
